Another important book from the Arab world that everyone should read.
After reading synopsis and preface of the book I was convinced, although doubting viability of such an endeavor, that what I am going to read is a kind of reportage with elements of comparative study of 4+ Arab countries, on basis of direct experience of six local people. And although Scott Anderson tends to form assumptions about the causes of ruptures in the subject Arab countries: "...lack of intrinsic sense of national identity, joined to a form of government that supplanted the traditional organizing principle of society...," these rather stem from a thorough knowledge of the region's intricacies and are here not to be proved but to bring clarity into the complexities of the region's current status.
Much of the book had first been published in a special issue of The New York Times Magazine on 14th August 2016. And it is precisely what I was craving for while reading this book - impressive, page-size journalistic photographs.
In the book Anderson relates stories of six people: the matriarch of a dissident Egyptian family, a Libyan Air Force cadet with divided loyalties, a Kurdish physician from a prominent warrior clan, a Syrian university student caught in civil war, an Iraqi activist for women's rights, and an Iraqi day laborer turned ISIS soldier. I think that there is nothing more telling than a firsthand recount of situation in place. More so in a war or fight against oppression. And although it is also true that these circumstances may in certain cases lead to a self-righteous advocacy of one's own stance, Anderson treats these pitfalls of human perception with detachment of a skilled war reporter and observer.
After reading The Morning They Came for Us: Dispatches from Syria by Janine Di Giovanni, I thought I was prepared and knew what to expect from this kind of books. However, reading Fractured Lands, my second book from war-torn Arab countries, I came to realize that there's no general group of hardships (to use the softest term to describe it), no general group of acts that can be called atrocities. There is each hardship, each atrocity standing on its own, devastating, hitting unexpectedly making you grasp for your breath while you are reading about it in the calmness and safety of your home. But that's the pure truth and today's world, flooded with false information needs to know the truth and therefore to have more books like the Anderson's and Di Giovanni's.
In terms of set up of the book, I found a bit disturbing that the stories of the six people did not form six standalone parts but were rather scattered across time-periods. Due to lack of time I read this book in the span of 2 weeks and I found it a bit difficult to remember where a story of one of the persons previously ended when Anderson picked it up again in a next time-period/part. I understand that this arrangement had been done on purpose, to emphasize concurrency of the stories but personally I've found it a bit tricky at times to follow through.
Provided that I am not that well oriented in the succession of events in Arab countries I was also missing some kind of a timeline of the most important turning points. And although these were mentioned in the text quite comprehensively I think that a basic timeline would help a reader to clearly place each single story within a larger picture.
But these are rather minor adjustments that did not change the fact that this is an important book I would recommend to everyone and therefore I gave it 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Penguin Random House for sending me Fractured Lands upon my request. It makes an important part of my slowly growing collection of books on Arab world and I will most probably go for rereading it soon or later due to valuable information about Arab countries it contains.

Kniha Mitterrandov klobúk, od francúzskeho spisovateľa, režiséra a scenáristu Antoina Lauraina je pre mňa osobne malým pokladom, ktorý som objavila vo výpredaji. Pravdou však zostáva, že na to, aby si človek mohol skutočne vychutnať túto knihu, musí mať v obľube veľmi špecifický štýl a humor, s akým Francúzi píšu, či tvoria filmy.
Útla kniha obsahuje krátke, samostatné príbehy štyroch ľudí, ktorých jediným spojivom je klobúk vtedajšieho francúzskeho prezidenta, socialistu Françoisa Mitterranda. Vo francúzskej politike sú to práve socialisti, ktorí predstavujú liberálnejší prúd. A tak aj v klobúku, ktorý si prezident zabudol v reštaurácii, akoby zostalo fluidum jeho majiteľa. Štyri hlavné postavy, v rukách ktorých sa klobúk postupne ocitá, pod jeho magickým vplyvom zrazu radikálne menia svoje životy, robiac rozhodnutia, ktoré doposiaľ nemali odvahu urobiť. O skutočnom majiteľovi klobúka však vie iba jedna z nich, účtovník Daniel, po boku ktorého prezident, spolu s kolegami: vtedajším ministrom zahraničných vecí Rolandom Dumasom a pravdepodobne premiérom Michelom Rocardom (v texte je spomenuté len jeho krstné meno), v reštaurácii náhodou večeral.
Prínosom románu, je pre mňa okrem samotného príbehu, aj náhľad do reality vtedajšej francúzskej spoločnosti a politiky.
"Mittrand, túto skratku obľubovala trochu staromilská, francúzska pravica, ktorá inklinovala k extrémnej pravici, hoci si to nepriznávala. Nebolo to pritom prvýkrát, čo tú skratku počul, siedmy, šestnásty a ôsmy obvod tvorili trojicu na čele parížskych obvodov, kde ju používali pri spoločenských večeriach. Starý aj nový gaullista, umiernený volič Únie pre francúzsku demokraciu, zdržanlivý volič Národného frontu či hrdý rojalista, všetci komolili meno hlavy štátu s nikdy nepriznaným cieľom, aby sa medzi sebou spoznali. Mittrand bolo heslo."
"Po návrate domov mu Charlotte oznámila, že pán Djian zrušil piatkový aperitív. Bernard sa rozmrzene spýtal, či si to rozmyslel. "Horšie," odvetila mu žena, "pozýva nás k Jacquesovi Séguélovi."
PR špecialista Jacques Séguéla pracoval na predvolebnej kampani Françoisa Mitterranda, pred prezidentskými voľbami v roku 1981, a vymyslel aj jeho slogan "La force tranquille" (Pokojná sila).
Hoci som posledné strany nedočkavo zhltla, musím priznať, že záver ma trocha sklamal, keďže som očakávala trocha menej objasnený, otvorený koniec. Aj preto som knihu na Goodreads napokon ohodnotila 4-rmi hviezdičkami z 5-tich.
English The book
The President’s Hat by French writer, film director and screenwriter Antoine
Lauraine, is for me a little treasure which I found in sale. However, it’s true
that in order to fully enjoy this book one has to like a specific style and humor that the French use when writing books or making films.
This tiny
book is composed of short standalone stories of four people linked only by the hat
of then French president, socialist François Mitterrand. In French politics the socialists represent more liberal stream. And so, in the hat left
behind in a restaurant by the president, it seems like there also has been left an esprit
of his owner. The four main characters, who subsequently put their hands on the
hat, under its magical influence suddenly start to radically change their
lives, making decisions they were scared to make before. Though, only one of them
knows the identity of its true owner, an accountant Daniel, who happened to dine
side by side with the president and his two colleagues: then Minister of
Foreign Affairs Roland Dumas and probably Prime Minister Michel Rocard (there’s
only his first name mentioned in the story).
One of the
assets of the novel for me, besides the story itself, are also insights to the
realities of then French society and politics.
Of all other settings, in one
moment, we found ourselves on a party thrown by French PR consultant Jacques
Séguéla who worked on Mitterrand’s presidential campaign in 1981, and invented his
slogan "La force tranquille" (The Calm Force).
Although I’ve
impatiently swallowed the last pages, I must admit that I was a bit
disappointed by the ending, since I hoped for a more open-ended and less
clarified conclusion. And this is also why I eventually decided to give the book 4/5
stars on Goodreads.
Note: The
quotations are missing from my English review, because I did not want to do one
of the biggest translation DON’TS. Since I don’t own neither the French
original of the book nor its English translation, I don’t want to do the
English translation via the Slovak one.

Keď som sa rozhodla zúčastniť sa Tell Me Three Things Global Blog Tour a podieľať sa na recenzovaný, nevedela som čo presne mám očakávať. Dostať pre napísanie recenzie kópiu knihy pred jej oficiálnym vydaním, bolo mojim snom už keď som začínala tento blog. Prebehla som si stručný opis deja na Goodreads a mala som pocit, že v knihe sa autorka zaoberá ťažkými životnými otázkami, ktoré ma priťahujú najviac. Čo je čiastočne pravda. Faktom, ktorý som pri rozhodnutí recenzovať túto knihu osobne trocha podcenila je, že ide o knihu pre dospievajúcu mládež (young adult - YA). Niekoľko kníh z tohto žánru som prečítala nielen v období svojho dospievania, ale aj iba pár mesiacov dozadu a mnohé sa mi mimoriadne páčili. Preto som nevidela dôvod, prečo by som to nemohla skúsiť aj s touto knihou, navyše obohatenou o záhadu, ktorá je jednou z hlavných dejových línii. A práve vďaka tejto dejovej línii, som hneď na prvých stranách objavila aj opis, ktorý je mne osobne hlboko vlastný.

Hlavnou postavou knihy je 16-ročná Jessie Holmesová, ktorej mama podľahla rakovine. Po dvoch rokoch sa jej otec oženil opäť a presťahovali sa z Chicaga, kde Jessie prežila celé svoje detstvo, do honosnej vily otcovej novej manželky v Los Angeles. Znie to ako začiatok rozprávky, nie však pre Jessie, ktorá musela opustiť rodné mesto, najlepšiu priateľku Scarlet, zvyknúť si nielen na nové prostredie, školu a spolužiakov, ale aj na nevlastnú matku a brata, no predovšetkým na neprítomnosť mamy a to práve v tých najťažších chvíľach jej dospievania.

"Ideálne dni sú pre ľudí s malými, uskutočniteľnými snami. Alebo možno pre nás všetkých existujú len pri spätnom pohľade; len teraz sú ideálne, pretože obsahujú niečo neodvolateľne a nenapraviteľne stratené."
A v tomto momente, na novom mieste, plnom neistoty a cudzích ľudí, dostáva Jessie, akoby zázrakom, virtuálneho priateľa, chlapca z novej školy v Los Angeles, ktorý jej krátko po príchode napíše e-mail pod pseudonymom Somebody Nobody (Niekto Nikto) alebo SN. A tak Jessie ani netuší o koho ide. SN sa postupne stáva jej oporou a dôverným priateľom, ktorý jej rozumie. Na rozlúštenie záhady kto je SN, však autorka necháva čitateľa čakať až do posledných strán.
Skutočnosť, že ide o YA román, mi však trocha spôsobovala problém úplne sa vžiť do pocitov a konania Jessie, ktorá sa mi zároveň miestami zdala ako tínedžerka, a miestami ako dospelá žena. A to druhé najmä v častiach kde Jessie uvažuje a kde autorka vkladá svoje vlastné myšlienky. Je ale pravdou, že strata tak blízkeho človeka, akou je matka, o ktorú prišla aj samotná Julie Buxbaum, prinúti aj veľmi mladého človeka pozerať sa na svet trocha inak a predčasne dospieť. Možno aj preto mi román nebol úplne cudzí a miestami dokázala Jessie dokonale vstúpiť aj do môjho vlastného vnímania a uvažovania.

"Určité skutočnosti robia všetko ostatné nepodstatným."
Čo mi ale v príbehu trocha chýbalo, bol väčší spád a gradácia. V príbehu sa síce deje niekoľko vecí, no zápletky sa riešia akosi rýchlo a priamočiaro. V deji mi chýbala trocha dramatickejšia a komplikovanejšia zápletka. Na druhej strane autorka v príbehu opisuje situácie, v ktorých sa dievča v Jessienom veku a okolnostiach môže veľmi ľahko nájsť a identifikovať sa s nimi. Čo je jedna z najväčších predností tejto knihy. Vzhľadom na to, že ide o prvý YA román z pera Julie Buxbaum, musím uznať, že sa s ním popasovala výborne.
A na záver recenzie pripájam ešte jednu myšlienku z knihy, ktorou autorka dokonale vystihla aj moje vlastné pocity.

When I decided to take part in the Tell Me Three Things blog tour and apply for the review, I didn't know what to expect. To receive an ARC for a review has been my dream ever since I started this blog. I ran through the short description on Goodreads and the book seemed to deal with though questions I like the most. Which is partially true. Though, when I decided to apply for the review, I somehow underestimated the fact that it's an YA book. I've already read several YA books and not only in my teenage times but only few months ago and I really liked many of them. So I didn't see any reason why I should not give this one a try. The more it comprised a mystery, which forms one of the central themes of the book. And thanks to this theme, on the very first pages I've discovered a description, which also provides one of the deepest characteristics of my own personality.
"In the Venn diagram of my life, my imagined personality and my real personality have never converged. Over email and text, though, I am given those few additional beats I need to be better, edited version of myself. To be that girl in the glorious intersection."
The main character of the book is 16-years old Jessie Holmes whose mother died of cancer. After two years her father married again and so they moved from Chicago, where Jessie spent her whole childhood, to an opulent mansion of her stepmother in Los Angeles. It sounds like a beginning of a fairytale but not for Jessie, who had to leave behind her hometown, her best friend Scarlet, get used not only to the new place, school and classmates but also to her stepmother and stepbrother, but mainly to absence of her mother during the hardest times of her adolescence.
"Perfect days are for people with small, realizable dreams. Or maybe for all of us, they just happen in retrospect; they're only now perfect because they contain something irrevocably and irretrievably lost."
And in this moment, in a new place full of uncertainties and strange people, Jessie is given, as if by a miracle, a virtual friend, a guy from her new school in Los Angeles, who shortly after her arrival, sends her an e-mail under the pseudonym Somebody Nobody or SN. So that Jessie has no idea who is it. SN gradually becomes her moral support and confidant who understands her. The author lets readers wait until the very last page in order to unveil the mystery of who SN really is.
The fact that this is a YA book made it a bit harder for me to put myself into Jessie's feelings and acting, who sometimes appeared to me as a teenage girl and the other times as a mature woman. And the later mainly in those parts where Jessie reflects and where author puts in her own thoughts. However, the truth is that loss of such a close person as mother, Julie Buxbaum herself lost her mother too, makes even very young person to see the world from a different perspective and grow up prematurely. Maybe that's also why the novel was not completely strange to me and sometimes Jessie made it perfectly to my own perception and thoughts.
"Certain facts tend to render everything else irrelevant."
But what I was missing a bit was greater momentum and gradation. Though several things happen in the story, plots are solved too fast and straightforwardly. I missed slightly more dramatic and more complicated plot. On the other hand the author portrays situations with which a girl of Jessie's age and in her circumstances can easily find herself and identify with them. Which is one of the largest strengths of this book. Forasmuch as this is the first YA novel by Julie Buxbaum I have to admit that she managed excellently.
And I would like to close my review with another thought from the book, by which author perfectly described also my own feelings.
"Maybe home doesn't have to be a place."
No, it really doesn't have to be a place, because for me too home isn't a place. It is a feeling.

Napísať recenziu knihy od Neila Gaimana, ktorý je mojim najobľúbenejším fantasy autorom (ako aj najobľúbenejším fantasy autorom tisícov a tisícov ľudí po celom svete), pre mňa znamená hovoriť o niečom, čo je zrejmé a tým aj zbytočné, ako hádzanie hrachu na stenu, či nosenie dreva do lesa. Ak máte radi fantasy, potom ste už na Neila Gaimana určite natrafili a netreba vám jeho tvorbu nijako bližšie predstavovať. Mnoho Gaimanových kníh však celkom nezapadá do fantasy, ale oveľa viac do žánru, ktorému sa hovorí magický realizmus: magický príbeh zasadený do reálneho sveta. A Oceán na konci ulice je jednou z nich. Ak ste však doposiaľ nemali tú česť a máte radi fantasy, či ešte len uvažujete nad tým, že by ste si mohli prečítať aj niečo z tohto žánru, no nie ste si celkom istí, či sa vám tento žáner bude páčiť, potom vám knihy Neila Gaimana vrelo odporúčam.
/ To write a review of a book by Neil Gaiman, who is my favorite fantasy writer (as well as favorite fantasy writer of thousands of people around the world), means for me like to state something obvious. If you like fantasy then you've certainly already came across Neil Gaiman and there's no need to introduce his works. Many Gaiman's books however do not fit the fantasy genre in but they fit rather in the genre called magical realism: magical story planted into real world. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one of them. If you haven't had the privilege to read Gaiman's books yet but you like fantasy, or you are pondering to read something from this genre but you are unsure if you will like it, then I warmly recommend you Gaiman's books.
V ten horúci piatkový večer, keď som začala čítať Oceán na konci ulice, samotnému čítaniu predchádzalo máčanie si opuchnutých nôh v lavóri so studenou vodou, sprevádzané relaxačným šumením vĺn z YouTube :) Až po chvíli mi zišla na um nečakaná asociácia s knihou, ktorú som sa chystala začať čítať: oceán v lavóri s vodou a útla knižka v mojej knižnici, s príbehom z pera výnimočného spisovateľa s neobmedzenou fantáziou.
/ On that hot Friday evening, when I started to read The Ocean at the End of the Lane, before starting to read actually, I was soaking my swollen feet in a basin with cold water accompanied by relaxing murmurs of the sea played from YouTube :) Only after a while an unexpected link with the book I was about to read occurred to me: the ocean in a basin and tiny book in my library, comprising story by an outstanding writer with unlimited imagination.
"I was not happy as a child, although from time to time I was content. I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else."
Oceán na konci ulice je príbehom, ktorý vznikol na základe spomienok Neila Gaimana na vlastné detstvo: dom, auto, záhradu, mesto, vlastný detský svet. Na tomto základe už potom Neil Gaiman rozvíja vlastnú fantáziu a to do smerov, výšok i hĺbok, aké dokáže vytvoriť jedine on. A stále necháva obrovský priestor aj pre fantáziu, otázky, domnienky, vysvetlenia a odpovede svojich čitateľov. To je úžasné majstrovstvo.
Hlavnou postavou a rozprávačom v jednej osobe, je muž v stredných rokoch, ktorý sa vracia do rodného mestečka, aby sa zúčastnil pohrebu. Po pohrebe ho cesta autom zláka ísť až na koniec ulice. Cestou sa pomaly rozpomína na svoje detstvo, až kým sa nedostane k farme na konci ulice. Sediac na lavičke pri rybníku si spomína na udalosti, ktoré sa odohrali keď mal sedem rokov. Rybník alebo oceán, patrí k farme rodiny, ktorú tvoria tri generácie Hempstockovských žien: Lettie, Ginie a stará pani Hempstocková. Najmladšia Lettie bola vtedy krátko jeho jedinou, no najlepšou kamarátkou, akú si mohol priať a prostredníctvom nej sa dostáva nielen do magického sveta, ale k samotnej podstate existencie. To sa však už dostávam k niečomu, čo treba objaviť pri čítaní samotnej knihy, aby to neznelo ako niečo úplne vytrhnuté z kontextu.
Mnoho vecí a skutočností v reálnom živote, ktoré považujeme za dané, nemenné a jasné, vyzerajú vo svojej podstate úplne inak ako ich vnímame - v skutočnosti sú niečím, či niekým iným. Presne ako rybník, či voda vo vedre, ktorá je v skutočnosti nekonečným oceánom. Alebo aj len niekoľko stranové vydanie Oceánu na konci ulice, a špeciálne to moje, medzinárodné, ktoré sa ľahko zmestí aj do mojej maličkej kabelky, a pritom obsahuje príbeh a otázky, ktoré vám zostanú v mysli ešte veľmi dlho po jej prečítaní.
/ The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a story based on Gaiman's recollections of his own childhood: the house, the car, the garden, the town and his own childish world. On this basis then Gaiman unwinds his own imagination in the ways, hights and depths only he can make. And he still leaves huge space for imagination, questions, speculations, explanations and answers of his readers. That is a great mastery. The main character and narrator in one is a midle-aged man returning to his home town to attend a funeral. On his way back, he is lured to drive until the end of the lane. On the way there, he gradually recalls his childhood till he reaches a farm at the end of the lane. Sitting on a bench by a pond he remembers events that happened when he was seven. The pond or the ocean, belongs to a farm of a family composed of three generations of Hempstock women: Lettie, Ginie and Old Mrs Hempstock. The youngest Lettie was then for a while his only and the best friend he could wish for and with her he gets not only into a magical world but gets to the very essence of the existence. However, I am getting too far with this. You have to discover it by reading the book, so that it does not sound without a context. Many things and facts in a real life which we consider to be given, unchanging and clear, actually look completely different as we perceive them - in reality they are something or someone different. Just like the pond, or water in a bucket, which is in reality an endless ocean. Or only a few pages edition of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and especially the international one I have, which even fits into my tiny handbag, and still it comprises a story and questions that will remain on your mind for a long time after you are done with the book.
"Nobody actually looks like what they really are on the inside. You don't. I don't. People are much more complicated than that. It's true of everybody."
Gaiman sa v príbehu zároveň majstrovským spôsobom hrá s pamäťou a spomienkami. V živote sa nanešťastie občas stanú veci, na ktoré by sme najradšej zabudli. Niekedy túto službu urobí naše podvedomie za nás, inokedy nie. Avšak v živote je aj množstvo vecí a zážitkov, ktoré by sme si najradšej uchovali v pamäti čo najlepšie, no nie je nám dovolené si na ne spomenúť a už vôbec nie si ich trvalo pamätať. A čo ak sa v zákutiach našej mysle skrýva oveľa viac spomienok, ako si sme schopní zapamätať? Oveľa viac než sme ich prežili za celý svoj život, od narodenia až po súčasnosť. Čo ak v našom vedomí existuje ďaleko viac spomienok, ktoré sa nám však odkrývajú len v určitých momentoch a aj to len veľmi nejasne? Ako déjà vu? Čo ak v sebe nosíme nie rybník, ale celý oceán spomienok? Nie je možno aj vedecké skúmanie formou rozpomínania sa?
/ In the story Gaiman also masterfully toys with memory and recollections. In life, unfortunatelysometimes happenthings thatwe wouldrather forget. Sometimes our subconsciousness does us the favor and sometimes it didn't. However, in life there are also plenty of things and experiences we would like to keep in our memory as best as we can but we are not allowed to remember them not to remember them permanently at all. And what if in there are many more memories hidden in the corners of our minds as we are able to remember? Many more than we relieved in our whole life from birth till today. What if there's far more memories in our mind that reveal themselves only in some moments and only very darkly? Like déjà vu? What if we keep inside not a pond but a whole ocean of memories? Isn't scientific research maybe also some kind of remembering?
Je tiež úžasné a zaujímave, ako sa dve knihy, ktoré čítam súčasne (zväčša jednu v angličtine a druhú v slovenčine), alebo v slede za sebou, dokážu vzájomne dopĺňať. V čase čítania knihy Oceán na konci ulice, som mala rozčítanú aj zbierku článkov Martina Mojžiša z týždenníka .týždeň, v ktorých populárnou formou vysvetľuje fyzikálne zákony, s ktorými síce denno-denne prichádzame do kontaktu, no nikdy sa nad nimi bližšie nezamýšľame, alebo pre nás nefyzikov zostávajú nevysvetlené, či pochopené celkom nesprávne. V niekoľkých článkoch sa autor okrajovo dotýka aj teórií kvantovej fyziky a mechaniky. A práve vplyv týchto vysoko vedeckých teórií je aj jednou z otázok, položených Neilovi Gaimanovi v mimoriadne zaujímavom videu o knihe Oceán na konci ulice, ktoré pripájam na záver tejto recenzie.
/ It's also amazing and interesting how two different books I read at the same time (usually one in English and the other in Slovak), or in succession, can complement one another. In the time of reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane, I was reading a collection of articles by Martin Mojžiš from the Slovak weekly .týždeň, in which in popular way he explains the laws of physics, which we encounter daily but we do not muse on them closely, or they stay unexplained for us non-physicists or even wrongly understood. In some of the articles the author also touches the theories of quantum physics and mechanics. And precisely the influence of these highly scientific theories is also one of the questions posed to Neil Gaiman in an interesting video about The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which you can find at the end of this review.
Po prečítaní ktorejkoľvek knihy od Neila Gaimana mám vždy chuť začať ju čítať odznova. Najprv ju dychtivo zhltnem, kapitolu po kapitole, a potom mám pocit, že si ju chce vychutnať ešte akosi lepšie - nielen nedočkavo chcieť poznať ďalší vývoj udalostí, ale vychutnať si ju ako celok, a zároveň veľmi detailne aj s tým, že už presne viem, ako skončí. V Gaimanových knihách je toho vždy oveľa viac, než len príbeh, vyvrcholenie a záver. A hoci túžim čítať a objavovať stále nové a nové knihy a príbehy, som si istá, že počas leta 2015 určite strávim pri knihe Oceán na konci ulice ešte niekoľko dní.
/ After finishing of any of the books by Neil Gaiman I feel like I would like to start to read all over again. First, I swallow it thirstily, chapter after chapter, and then I have the feeling that I want to enjoy it somehow better - not only want impatiently to know how the story is going to develop, but enjoy it as a whole as well as very thoroughly, even already knowing how it will end. In books by Gaiman there's still something more than only a story, culmination and the end. And though I desire to read and discover still new books and stories, I am sure that during Summer 2015 I am going to spend another few days by The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Toľko stručný opis základného rámca knihy, ktorý by ma celkom určite odradil vybrať si ju ako populárnu literatúru na oddychové čítanie. Až na to, že Markus Zusak dokázal na tomto základe vytvoriť jednu z najlepších kníh aké som kedy čítala.
/ That's short description of the basic framework of the book, which would for sure prevent me from choosing it as modern fiction for leisure reading. Except that Markus Zusak managed to create on this basis one of the best books I've ever read.
Kniha sa vyznačuje osobitým štýlom. Obsadenie smrti do úlohy rozprávača, poskytlo autorovi možnosť pozrieť sa na ľudské konanie z pohľadu outsidera, ktorý má na druhej strane možnosť sledovať ľudstvo a jeho konanie už niekoľko storočí. A túto možnosť využil Markus Zusak úplne naplno. Vecné komentáre pomenúvajúce veci pravým menom, s jemnou príchuťou žartu a irónie, pri ktorých má čitateľ pocit, že lepšie sa daná skutočnosť už postihnúť ani nedá.
/ The book has a specific style. Casting of the death in the role of the narrator, equipped Zusak with opportunity to view human acts from the point of an outsider, who on the other hand had the possibility to watch humanity and its actions for several centuries. And Zusak takes advantage of this possibility to the fullest. Matter-of-fact comments calling things by their proper names, with slight taste of joke and irony, when a reader gets the feeling that there's no better way to express the particular reality.

Smrť v podaní Markusa Zusaka je v mnohých ohľadoch aj, a toto vás možno prekvapí, mimoriadne ľudská. Oveľa ľudskejšia než ľudia, ktorí v histórii spôsobili zločiny ako Adolf Hitler. Toto je Smrť, ktorá dokáže rozlíšiť rôzne odtiene tak dobra, ako aj zla.

Zlodejka kníh je však v prvom rade knihou o neskutočnej sile slov. Slovo je mocná zbraň, dokáže zabíjať, ale aj zachraňovať a dať životu nový zmysel. Hlavnou postavou knihy je dievčatko Liesel, ktorá sa ako deväťročná dostáva do adoptívnej rodiny Hubermannovcov, žijúcich na chudobnej Himmel Strasse, v okrajovej časti Mníchova. Liesel je negramotná, no priťahovaná svetom slov a kníh, sa za pomoci svojho pestúnskeho otca, harmonikára a bytového maliara Hansa Hubermanna, postupne učí čítať aj písať. Dve činnosti, ktoré tak zásadne zmenia celý jej ďalší život a to tak v dobrom, ako aj hrôzostrašnom zmysle.

The main character of the book is a little girl Liesel. Liesel is 9-years-old when she arrives into her foster family of Hubermanns, living on poor Himmel Street in the outskirts of Munich. Liesel is illiterate, though lured by the world of words and books, with help of her foster father, accordionist and house painter Hans Hubermann, she learns to read and write. Two activities that will profoundly change her life both in a positive as well as in a horrific way.

Popri zverstvách spôsobených nacistami, by sme takmer zabudli, že aj v nacistickom Nemecku žili obyčajní ľudia, ktorí chceli len pokojne žiť a s režimom nechceli mať nič spoločné, čo sa im ale kruto vypomstilo. V nacistickom Nemecku celkom určite žili aj ľudia podobní postavám z tejto knihy: deti, so svojim vlastným svetom, ako Liesel a jej najlepší kamarát Rudy Steiner; ľudia súcitiaci a obetaví ako Hubermannovci, či manželia Steinerovci, chrániaci vlastnú rodinu. Zločiny na ľuďoch, spáchané nacistami sa nedajú ničím zastrieť a nesnaží sa o to ani Markus Zusak. Markus Zusak predkladá skutočnosť vo všetkých jej rozmeroch.
/ Next to the atrocities committed by the Nazi, we would almost forget that even in the Nazi Germany, there were still ordinary people that only wanted to live in peace and didn't want to have anything to do with the regime, which cruelly rebounded on them. In the Nazi Germany, there certainly lived people similar to the characters from this book: kids with their own world like Liesel and her best friend Rudy Steiner; people compassionate and devoted like the Hubermanns, or Mr and Mrs Steiner, trying to protect their own family. Crimes against people committed by Nazis can't be covered by anything and Zusak don't even try to do so. Zusak presents the reality in all its dimensions.
Ako absolventku politológie ma určitým spôsobom láka každá beletria spojená s nejakým politickým režimom. Napriek tomu, a možno viac kvôli stručnému opisu z úvodu, som dlho otáľala nad kúpou a prečítaním si tejto knihy. Zlodejka kníh však rozhodne patrila na môj zoznam kníh na prečítanie. Hoci som typický pomalý čitateľ a prečítanie jednej priemernej knihy (cca 350-400 strán) mi bežne trvá aj celý mesiac, Zlodejku kníh som doslova hltala, niekedy aj pár kapitol naraz. Lákala ma a ja som sa večer čo večer, ráno čo ráno, tešila na čítanie. Majstrovskému štýlu Markusa Zusaka nechýba hádam nič. Niekedy čosi tají a mnohokrát prezrádza dej dopredu avšak neodrádza, ba presne naopak, láka prečítať si ešte jednu kapitolu. Alebo dve. Či tri? ;)
/ As a Political Science graduate I feel kind of attracted by fiction connected to some kind of political system. In spite of this, and maybe more due to the short description from the beginning, I've been hesitating to buy and read this book. However, The Book Thief was absolutely supposed to belong to my 'To Read List'. Although I am typical slow reader and it normally takes me even a month to read an average book (approx. 350-400 pages), I was swallowing The Book Thief, sometimes even several chapters in one session. It attracted me and every evening and every morning I was looking forward to read on. Zusak's masterful writing lacks perhaps nothing. Sometimes he keeps things hidden though many times he reveals next events but without discouraging, indeed the opposite, he attracts to read one more chapter. Or two. Or three? ;)
Zlodejka kníh právom patrí do mojej knižnice a do imaginárnej police mojich obľúbených kníh. Je to nádherná kniha.

Knihu som objavila prostredníctvom Pinterestu ešte pred jej vydaním, keď ma hneď v prvom momente zaujal jej obal, ktorý je, tak ako všetky ďalšie ilustrácie v knihe, dielom talianskej ilustrátorky menom Felicita Sala. Viac o nej, ako aj o jej tvorbe sa dozviete na jej blogu: Felicita Sala Illustration. Následne som si, tak ako pri každej knihe, ktorá upúta moju pozornosť, pozrela hodnotenie, stručný obsah a prvé recenzie na stránke Goodreads, a to všetko ma presvedčilo o tom, že táto kniha stojí za to, aby som si ju prečítala.
/ I've discovered the book via Pinterest even before its publication, when I was captured by its cover at the first sight. The cover, as well as all illustrations in this book, are works by Italian illustrator Felicita Sala. You can find more about her life and works on her blog: Felicita Sala Illustration. Subsequently, just like I do with every book which caught my attention, I checked Goodreads for its rating, short description and first reviews. And all this convinced me that the book is worth of reading.
Prostredie, v ktorom sa román odohráva je úplne úžasné a bolo jedným z dôvodov, ktoré ma podnietili kúpiť a prečítať si túto knihu. Dej románu je zasadený v dystopickom svete, ktorý zaplavila voda a po kontinentoch zostalo už len niekoľko roztrúsených súostroví. V dôsledku toho sa aj ľudia rozdelili na landlockers (ľudia žijúci na pevnine) a damplings (ľudia žijúci na lodiach, na mori). Hlavnými postavami románu sú dve ženy: North a Callanish. North žije na mori, kde v cirkuse Excalibur, putujúcom od ostrova k ostrovu, vystupuje spolu so svojim medveďom. Callanish je Gracekeeper a jej úlohou je pochovávať mŕtvych pod vodnou hladinou okolo svojho malého ostrova, a v súlade s tradíciou označiť miesto posledného odpočinku klietkou s vtákom zvaným Grace, šľachteným presne na tento účel (preto Gracekeeper). Po tragédii v cirkuse sa cesty oboch žien vzájomne pretnú a obe zisťujú, že ich spája spoločný osud.
/ The setting of the novel is wonderful and it's been one of the reasons that encouraged me to buy and read this book. The story takes place in a dystopian world flooded by ocean and of the former continents there remained only few scattered archipelagos. As a result the people of the world split into landlockers (people living on earth) and damplings (people living on boats on the sea). There are two women protagonists in the novel: North and Callanish. North lives on the sea in a circus Excalibur, where she performs together with her bear. Callanish is a gracekeeper and her main task is to rest dead damplings under the sea surface surrounding her small island, and in line with the tradition to mark the resting place with a caged bird, breed especially for this purpose called Grace (that's why the Gracekeeper). After a tragedy in the circus lives of the women collide to find out that they share the same fate.
Kniha vo mne po prečítaní, ako aj po prečítaní recenzií ostatných čitateľov, zanechala zmiešané pocity. Na jednej strane v nej viem nájsť úplne všetko, čo zdôrazňujú čitatelia, ktorým sa veľmi páčila, no na strane druhej, vo mne zostávajú otázky, na ktoré som celý román čakala odpovede, ale nedostala som ich. Nemám najmenšiu pochybnosť o tom, že Kirsty Logan je mimoriadne talentovanou spisovateľkou. Kniha je plná nádherných, rozmanitých, magických opisov a to tak prostredia, samotného deja, ako aj rôznych postáv.
/ After I finished the book and read reviews by other readers, I was left with rather mixed feelings. On the one hand, I can find there every thing highlighted by the readers who liked the book, but on the other hand, in vain I was waiting for the whole novel to get my questions answered. There is no doubt that Kirsty Logan is an exceptionally talented writer. The book is full of wonderful, diverse and magical descriptions of surroundings, the story itself as well as of various characters.
Možno je to jednoducho tým, že som zvyknutá na trocha iný druh fantasy literatúry aký ponúka Kirsty Logan v tomto románe. A možno je to akási forma vysokoškolsko-politologickej deformácie, že od dystopických románov podvedome vždy očakávam akýsi rámec, formu, systém fungovania spoločnosti, ktorý riadi konanie a rozhodnutia ľudí v ňom žijúcich. Počas celého románu som čakala na vysvetlenia o fungovaní sveta, v ktorom postavy žijú. Odpovede na otázky 'Prečo? Ako je to možné?', ktoré som tam však nenašla. Okrem toho som mala pocit, akoby autorka dostatočne nevyužila potenciál, ktorý jej dystopia zasadená do morského sveta ponúkala. Navyše, istá časť tohto sveta, ktorá tak výrazne zasiahla do životov oboch hlavných postáv, zostala nepovšimnutá a nevysvetlená. Čakala som skôr rámec, než hĺbku. Ak ste už prečítali takmer všetky dystopie a ste zanietenými fanúšikmi tohto žánru (ja osobne som ich prečítala len pár a radím sa skôr k fanúšikom, bez prívlastku zanietený), toto pravdepodobne nebude kniha pre vás a to aj napriek tomu, že spadá do vášho obľúbeného žánru.
Spočiatku som mala dojem, že cieľom románu je zdôrazniť inakosť a nonkonformitu, avšak aj s týmto postrehom som nebola ďaleko od pravdy. Podstatu románu asi najlepšie vystihuje výrok jednej z hlavných postáv v závere románu: "Nepatríme nikam, pretože môžeme patriť všade." Domov nie je miesto, ale pocit.
/ Maybe it's because I am used to a different kind of fantasy literature than the one offered in this novel by Kirsty Logan. And maybe it's some form of university-political science deformation that I subconsciously await some kind of framework, form, system of operation of the society ruling the actions and decisions of the people living inside. Throughout the whole novel I was waiting for explanations about functioning of the world in which the characters live. Answers to the questions 'Why? How come?" that I haven't found. In addition to this I had the feeling that Logan did not use the potential offered by the dystopian novel set in a world of seas to the fullest. Moreover, certain part of this world which affected lives of both main characters, had been left unnoticed and unexplained. I awaited more some kind of framework than depth. So if you've read almost all dystopian novels and you are passionate fans of this genre (me personally, I read just a couple and I am more a fan, without the passionate attribute), then this probably won't be a book for you, though it belongs to your favourite genre. Initially, I had the feeling that the aim of this novel is to highlight the difference and nonconformity, however even with this observation I haven't been that far from the truth. The substance of the novel is best described by a sentence by one of the main characters at the end of the novel: "We don't belong anywhere, because we can belong everywhere." Home is not a place, home is a feeling.
