The Non-fiction November is another kind of a loose readathon focused on reading more non-fiction books. It is run throughout November by two BookTubers Gemma and Olive.
Although non-fiction is basically the main genre I like to read, so I don't need a Non-fiction November to spur my interest in reading more of the genre, I've decided to participate in order to be able to focus mainly on the non-fiction books I am currently reading.

My first pick is Slovak translation of a briliant reportage book The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich. This is a tough book but one definitely worth reading. On basis of interviews with women who were part of soviet army during World War II, Alexievich shows the other face of war, she shows the greatness, the whole universe inside of a single man, or more precisely woman in this case, facing so many different realities of war one could imagine. So it basically touches upon almost each of the Non-fiction November 2017 challenges except for the scholarship one. I have only some 100 pages left.

Mojou prvou voľbou je slovenský preklad knihy Vojna nemá ženskú tvár od Svetlany Alexijevič. Je to veľmi ťažká kniha no určite stojí za prečítanie a odporučila by som ju každému. Na základe rozhovorov so ženami, ktoré sa zúčastnili Veľkej vlasteneckej vojny, Alexijevič ukazuje inú tvár vojny, ukazuje veľkosť, celý vesmír vnútri človeka - ženy, čeliac takému množstvu rôznych stránok vojny, aké si človek dokáže predstaviť.

Keďže do konca knihy Vojna nemá ženskú tvár mi už zostáva len necelých 100 strán, čo mi na celý november určite nebude stačiť, pri včerajšej návšteve obchodu so zľavnenými knihami som objavila druhú knihu od Ľubomíra Jančoka - Francúzsky paradox. Kým jeho prvá kniha Glamour Paríža sa sústreďovala viac na životný štýl obyvateľov hlavného mesta Francúzska, jeho druhá kniha má širší záber, od gastronómie, cez literatúru, až po politiku. Kniha pre mňa, ako frankofila, ako stvorená.
And here comes a book that fits into the scholarship challenge perfectly. As it says on the tin the Ever Closer Union by Desmond Dinan offers a quite chunky (624 pages) introduction to European integration, which was and still is my favorite field of study within political science. Although this is rather academic book (other Dinan's book was indeed part of my compulsory reading during my university studies) every academic will notice Dinan's easy writing style peppered with his well-directed remarks. Desmond Dinan is definitely one of my favorite European integration scholars.
And this book can also pass for the fourth challenge, which is 'Home': I am proud citizen of Slovakia which also makes me a citizen of the European Union and it indeed feels like I am still home wherever I go, crossing no borders and even paying with the same currency in 19 of the EU member states.
And after my favorite scholar, here comes my favorite fiction writer, now, for a change, in his non-fiction piece. I started to read The View from the Cheap Seats by Neil Gaiman during the Autumn Readathon and I would like to finish it until the end of November.
Although it is Non-fiction November, I have 2 other fiction books I would like to read and ideally also finish in November and these are A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

In the forefront of my September Arab World TBR stands Fractured Lands: How the Arab World Came Apart by Scott Anderson, which I requested and was kindly sent for review by Penguin Random House.
In his reportage book Scott Anderson examines causes of ruptures in countries of Middle East and North Africa through the eyes and experience of six people: the matriarch of a dissident Egyptian family; a Libyan Air Force cadet with divided loyalties; a Kurdish physician from a prominent warrior clan; a Syrian university student caught in civil war; an Iraqi activist for women's rights; and an Iraqi day laborer-turned-ISIS fighter.

V slovenskom preklade tiež vyšla kniha Denníky z Rakky: Útek z "islamského štátu", ktorú som si v anglickom originály kúpila ešte v apríli a som rada, že sa ju konečne chystám začať čítať. Autorom knihy je 24-ročný Sýrčan, vystupujúci pod pseudonymom Samer, ktorý prežil hrôzy počas okupácie mesta Raqqa takzvaným Islamským štátom, a rozhodol sa o nich podať svedectvo a to aj napriek hrozbe trestu smrti. Okrem nesmierneho prínosu samotného svedectva a odvahy autora, je prínosom aj forma, ktorou je kniha spracovaná. Príbeh je doplnený ilustráciami v štýle urban art, ktoré robia knihu prístupnejšou a adresnejšou pre súčasnú spoločnosť.

I purchased The Raqqa Diaries: Escape from 'Islamic State' some time ago and I am glad that I am finally about to read it. The author of the book is a 24-year-old Syrian with pseudonym Samer, who survived horrors during occupation of Raqqa by the so called Islamic State and decided to testify even under the threat of death penalty. Besides the enormous contribution of the testimony and courage of the author, the asset of the book lies also in the form it was put together. The story is accompanied by urban art illustrations, which makes it even more accessible and designed for contemporary society.
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize 2017. Some say it is a love story and some say it is nothing like that. And though, it certainly begins with a love story of a young couple, it is most of all a kind of magical realism planted into today's troubled world of a Middle Eastern country on a brink of civil war. And when the war erupts mysterious doors into faraway countries begin to appear for people to flee into safety.
Khomeini, Sade and Me by Abnousse Shalmani is a fiction with elements of a memoir, originally written in French. Shalmani was born in Iran but she refused to conform to Islamic rules for women. However, when her family emigrates to France she finds rules connected with religion being no less restrictive. I suppose this being a personal story of a woman and her attitude towards rules imposed by religion, formed under the influence of Islamic law and streams in French society.

Kniha Mitterrandov klobúk, od francúzskeho spisovateľa, režiséra a scenáristu Antoina Lauraina je pre mňa osobne malým pokladom, ktorý som objavila vo výpredaji. Pravdou však zostáva, že na to, aby si človek mohol skutočne vychutnať túto knihu, musí mať v obľube veľmi špecifický štýl a humor, s akým Francúzi píšu, či tvoria filmy.
Útla kniha obsahuje krátke, samostatné príbehy štyroch ľudí, ktorých jediným spojivom je klobúk vtedajšieho francúzskeho prezidenta, socialistu Françoisa Mitterranda. Vo francúzskej politike sú to práve socialisti, ktorí predstavujú liberálnejší prúd. A tak aj v klobúku, ktorý si prezident zabudol v reštaurácii, akoby zostalo fluidum jeho majiteľa. Štyri hlavné postavy, v rukách ktorých sa klobúk postupne ocitá, pod jeho magickým vplyvom zrazu radikálne menia svoje životy, robiac rozhodnutia, ktoré doposiaľ nemali odvahu urobiť. O skutočnom majiteľovi klobúka však vie iba jedna z nich, účtovník Daniel, po boku ktorého prezident, spolu s kolegami: vtedajším ministrom zahraničných vecí Rolandom Dumasom a pravdepodobne premiérom Michelom Rocardom (v texte je spomenuté len jeho krstné meno), v reštaurácii náhodou večeral.
Prínosom románu, je pre mňa okrem samotného príbehu, aj náhľad do reality vtedajšej francúzskej spoločnosti a politiky.

PR špecialista Jacques Séguéla pracoval na predvolebnej kampani Françoisa Mitterranda, pred prezidentskými voľbami v roku 1981, a vymyslel aj jeho slogan "La force tranquille" (Pokojná sila).
Hoci som posledné strany nedočkavo zhltla, musím priznať, že záver ma trocha sklamal, keďže som očakávala trocha menej objasnený, otvorený koniec. Aj preto som knihu na Goodreads napokon ohodnotila 4-rmi hviezdičkami z 5-tich.
English The book
The President’s Hat by French writer, film director and screenwriter Antoine
Lauraine, is for me a little treasure which I found in sale. However, it’s true
that in order to fully enjoy this book one has to like a specific style and humor that the French use when writing books or making films.
This tiny
book is composed of short standalone stories of four people linked only by the hat
of then French president, socialist François Mitterrand. In French politics the socialists represent more liberal stream. And so, in the hat left
behind in a restaurant by the president, it seems like there also has been left an esprit
of his owner. The four main characters, who subsequently put their hands on the
hat, under its magical influence suddenly start to radically change their
lives, making decisions they were scared to make before. Though, only one of them
knows the identity of its true owner, an accountant Daniel, who happened to dine
side by side with the president and his two colleagues: then Minister of
Foreign Affairs Roland Dumas and probably Prime Minister Michel Rocard (there’s
only his first name mentioned in the story).
One of the
assets of the novel for me, besides the story itself, are also insights to the
realities of then French society and politics.
Of all other settings, in one
moment, we found ourselves on a party thrown by French PR consultant Jacques
Séguéla who worked on Mitterrand’s presidential campaign in 1981, and invented his
slogan "La force tranquille" (The Calm Force).
Although I’ve
impatiently swallowed the last pages, I must admit that I was a bit
disappointed by the ending, since I hoped for a more open-ended and less
clarified conclusion. And this is also why I eventually decided to give the book 4/5
stars on Goodreads.
Note: The
quotations are missing from my English review, because I did not want to do one
of the biggest translation DON’TS. Since I don’t own neither the French
original of the book nor its English translation, I don’t want to do the
English translation via the Slovak one.
Je tomu už viac než rok, čo som na tomto blogu uverejnila posledný knižný úlovok. To však neznamená, že do mojej knižnice medzitým nepribudli žiadne knihy. Išlo skôr o nedostatok času pre písanie pravidelných príspevkov.
Z tohto februárového knižného úlovku mám o to väčšiu radosť, že obsahuje starostlivo (niektoré aj náhodne, no veľmi dobre) vybrané knihy, na ktoré sa už veľmi teším.
Prvou knihou v mojom februárovom knižnom úlovku, je kniha Strácam svoje ja od Lisy Genovej, ktorú som už dávno chcela čítať a ktorú som v slovenskom preklade náhodou našla medzi knihami vo výpredaji. Je príbehom úspešnej profesorky, ktorú postihne skorá forma Alzheimerovej choroby.
English It's been more than a year since I last published a book haul. Though, this does not mean that I haven't added any new books to my library since then. It was more due to lack of time for writing of regular posts. I like this February book haul the more that it comprises carefully (some accidentally, but very well) picked books, I am looking forward to read. First book in my February book haul is the Slovak translation of Still Alice by Lisa Genova, I've wanted to read for some time, and which I found among books in sale. It is story of a successful profesor being diagnosed early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
Rozhodla som sa, že budem čítať viac francúzskej literatúry a s týmto cieľom som si kúpila aj prvý zväzok majstrovského diela Marcela Prousta, Hľadanie strateného času, z nádhernej Penguin Classics Deluxe edície. Vydanie má okrem dobovo ilustrovaného obalu v štýle Art Deco, aj tzv. francúzske chlopne (ktoré robia mäkkú väzbu kvalitnejšou a trvácnejšou) a nerovné okraje strán. Je prvým deluxe vydaním v mojej knižnici.

Recently I've decided to read more French literature and with this aim in mind I bought the first volume of the masterpiece In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust, published in a wonderful Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition. Besides the Art Deco illustrated cover, it has also French flaps and deckled edges. It is the first deluxe edition in my library.
Môjmu februárovému knižnému úlovku dominuje Blízky Východ a Afrika. Ak si dobre spomínam, tak o oboch knihách na obrázku vyššie, som sa dozvedela prostredníctvom vlogu britskej vlogerky, čitateľky a spisovateľky Jen Campbellovej.
The Morning They Came for Us: Dispatches from Syria je kniha vojnovej novinárky Janine di Giovanni, ktorá na základe osobných stretnutí a rozhovorov, podáva príbehy ľudí, ktorých zasiahla vojna v Sýrii.
Knižka From Syria with Love je zbierkou kresieb, básničiek a príbehov sýrskych detí z utečeneckého tábora v Libanone, ktoré sú doplnené príbehmi ľudí, ktorí s nimi v tábore pracovali. Výťažok z predaja knižky ide priamo na pomoc týmto deťom.
English My February book haul is dominated by Middle East and Africa. If I remember it right, I learned about the two books above from the vlog by British vlogger, reader and author Jen Campbell. The Morning They Came for Us: Dispatches from Syria by a war reporter Janine di Giovanni, who on basis of personal encounters and interviews brings forward stories of people affected by the war in Syria. From Syria with Love is a collection of drawings, poems and stories by Syrian children from a refuge camp in Lebanon, supplemented by stories of people working in this camp. All profits from the book go towards supporting children in this camp.
Knihu nigérijskej autorky Chimamandy Ngozi Adichie mi odporučila nórska blogerka a vlogerka Alice Lippart z The Book Castle. Adichie je jej obľúbenou autorkou, a preto som ju požiadala o radu pri výbere úplne prvej knihy od tejto autorky, ktorú budem čítať. Poradila mi román Americanah, ktorý je jej najobľúbenejším.
English I was recommended the book by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Norwegian blogger and vlogger Alice Lippart from The Book Castle. Since Adichie is her favorite author, I decided to ask her for advice on the very first book by the author I should pick. And she advised me to pick Americanah, which is her favorite.
Brexit - je asi jedna z prvých vecí, ktorá človeku v súčasnosti zíde na um, keď sa spomenie Veľká Británia. Nevyhnutnou podmienkou pre pochopenie prítomnosti i budúcnosti, je pre mňa poznanie minulosti, čo bolo tiež hlavným motívom pre výber prvej časti oficiálnej biografie Margaret Thatcherovej od Charlesa Moora. A motívom pre výber tejto konkrétnej Penguin edície, bol typický oranžový chrbát knihy, ktorý pasuje ku knihe od Anne Applebaum, z rovnakej edície, ktorú som kúpila skôr.

Brexit - is nowadays one of the first things that comes to one's mind when one mentions the United Kingdom. For me the prerequisite to understanding the present and future is being familiar with the past, and this was the main reason why I decided to pick the first volume of the authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher by Charles Moore. And I decided to pick this particular Penguin edition due to its characteristic orange spine, which matches the book by Anne Applebaum from the same edition I bought earlier.
Britská biografia a francúzska fikcia. Knižku Mitterrandov klobúk od súčasného francúzskeho autora Antoina Lauraina, som kúpila vo výpredaji. A pre mňa osobne je dôkazom, že do výpredajov sa nedostávajú iba knihy, ktoré svojim obsahom za veľa nestoja, ale občas sa tam dostanú aj také, ktoré čitatelia z určitých dôvodov prehliadajú. Hoci si myslím, že v tomto konkrétnom prípade musí byť človek zvyknutý a mať rád špecifický štýl, ktorým Francúzi píšu knihy a tvoria filmy, a neprekáža mu ani tá štipka politiky, prepašovaná do ich deja. Napriek tomu, že nemám v obľube písanie vyčerpávajúcich recenzií, ku knihe Mitterrandov klobúk recenziu určite napíšem. Práve preto, že ide o milú, malú knižku, ktorá na to, aby oslovila, siahodlhú recenziu ani nepotrebuje.

British biography and French fiction. I bought The President's Hat by a contemporary French author Antoine Laurain in sale. And for me it is a proof enough that books end up in sale not only because they are not worth reading but because they are underrated or somehow overlooked by readers on certain grounds. Though, I think, that in this particular case, one has to be used to and has to like the characteristic style of French books and films and should have nothing against tiny bits of politics smuggled into their plots. And although I don't like writing comprehensive reviews, I am certainly going to review The President's Hat. Just because it is a nice little book that does not require a complex review in order to attract.

Hoci Margaret Thatcherová v deji Mitterrandovho klobúka zatiaľ spomenutá nebola (ale čo nie je, môže byť, momentálne som približne v strede príbehu a z európskych politikov bol zatiaľ v deji spomenutý vtedajší nemecký kancelár Helmut Kohl), no ako najvyšší politický predstavitelia, s takmer rovnakým funkčným obdobím, sa francúzsky prezident François Mitterrand a britská premiérka Margaret Thatcherová stretávali pravidelne. English Although Margaret Thatcher was not mentioned in The President's Hat (but it could still happen, since I am halfway through and there has already been then German Chancellor Helmut Kohl mentioned), but as the top state representatives with almost the same tenure, the French president François Mitterrand and the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher used to meet regularly. They are together on an intriguing picture above during their meeting in 1986.
Na leto 2015 zatiaľ neplánujem nič špeciálne. Leto 2015, podobne ako to pred rokom, strávim opäť predovšetkým v práci. Len koncom augusta ma čaká dovolenka doma na východe. Voľné chvíle plánujem stráviť s priateľmi, výletmi do okolia Bratislavy, blogovaním a tvorením a inými vecami, ktoré s tým súvisia. Krátka dovolenka za hranicami Slovenska ma čaká až zaciatkom októbra. Okrem hore uvedeného, som si na leto 2015 pripravila aj zoznam kníh, ktoré by som v lete chcela prečítať.
Keďže leto sa už pravidelne spája s oddychom, aj môj knižný zoznam na leto 2015 pozostáva predovšetkým z kníh, ktoré považujem za oddychové. Pri zostavovaní zoznamu na leto 2015 som zo svojho zoznamu všetkých kníh, ktoré by som chcela čítať, vybrala tie s ľahšími témami, živé, veselé, zábavné, povzbudivé, či o láske. Hoci, nájde sa medzi nimi aj jedna, či dve výnimky. Ešte presne neviem koľko kníh sa mi v lete podarí prečítať, keďže leto
ponúka aj množstvo iných úžasných možností ako stráviť voľný čas, knihy, ktoré budem toto leto čítať, si však budem vyberať práve z tohto zoznamu:

I don’t know yet how many books will I be able to read this summer, since summer offers plenty of other fantastic possibilities of spending my free time but the books I will chose the books I’m going to read this summer from the list below:
LEAV, LANG: Lullabies - knihu poézie mám vo svojom zozname kníh na prečítanie už dlhšie. Ide v poradí už o druhú knihu poézie z pera tejto autorky. Knižku Love and Misadventure, ktorá je hlavne o láske, som prečítala ešte začiatkom roka. A teraz snáď konečne prišiel čas na ďalšiu z dvojice.
/ I’ve been having this book of poetry on my 'To Read List' for some time already. It’s a second book of poetry by this author. I’ve read the Love and Misadventure, which is mostly about love, at the beginning of this year. And now the time for the second book has eventually come.
SU, BERNIE & RORICK, KATE: The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet - túto skvelú adaptáciu románu Pýcha a predsudok od Jane Austenovej, ktorá vznikla aj v knižnej podobe po úspechu formátu na YouTube, pod názvom "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries", mám práve rozčítanú a keď sa do nej začítam, tak skutočne neviem prestať ;)
/ I am currently in the middle of reading of this amazing adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, which builds on the success of the YouTube sensation called “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries”, and each time I start to read on, I’m simply unable to put it down.
MONTGOMERY, L.M.: The Blue Castle - vedeli ste, že Lucy Maud Montgomeryová napísala aj iné knihy ako len sériu o Anne zo zeleného domu? Možno hlúpa otázka, ale okrem snáď dvoch ďalších kníh, ktoré som dostala ešte ako dieťa, som skutočne netušila, že existujú ešte dve podobné, hoci menšie série kníh, ako bola tá o Anne. The Blue Castle (Modrý hrad) však nie je súčasťou ani jednej z nich. Je to samostatný román, príbeh 29-ročnej, a stále nezadanej Valancy Stirlingovej, hľadajúcej pravé životné šťastie.
/ Did you know that Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote also other books than only the series about Anne of Green Gables? Maybe stupid question but besides perhaps two other books I’ve been given as a child, I had no idea that two other, though smaller series than that about Anne do exist. However, The Blue Castle does not belong to neither of them. It’s a standalone novel about 29-years old, unmarried Valancy Stirling, searching for true happiness. AUSTEN, JANE: Láska slečny Elliotovej / Persuasion - Jane Austenová samozrejme nesmie chýbať na mojom letnom knižnom zozname ;)

HERIBANOVÁ, TAMARA: Malá doba ľadová - a toto je jedna z tých výnimiek, ktoré sa vymykajú sfére ľahších tém, ktoré by mali dominovať môjmu knižnému zoznamu na leto 2015. Nadaná slovenská spisovateľka Tamara Heribanová sa v knihe zaoberá problémami, ktoré sa občas objavia v partnerskom živote.
/ This is one of the exceptions, written by talented Slovak writer Tamara Heribanova. In the book Tamara deals with partnership and problems that sometimes make their appearance among two people.
SMITH, BETTY: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - a toto je druhá výnimka. Je ňou nádherný román o dospievajúcej Francie Nolan, pochádzajúcej z rodiny žijúcej v Brooklyne. Toto je jedna z kníh, na ktoré sa z tohto zoznamu teším asi najviac.
/ This is yet another exception. It is a wonderful novel about coming-of-age Francie Nolan coming from a family living in Brooklyn. This is actually one of the books I am looking forward to at most.
GAVALDA, ANNA: Pár gramov pohody / Breaking Away - populárnu francúzsku autorku Annu Gavaldu som si obľúbila hneď ako som sa začala boriť s francúzskym originálom zbierky poviedok Chcel by som, aby mňa niekto niekde čakal (v originály Je voudrais que quelqu'un m'attende quelque part). Napriek mojej iba mierne pokročilej francúzštine ma kniha veľmi oslovila. Anna Gavalda vo svojich knihách a poviedkach opisuje bežné životné situácie neobyčajným spôsobom: je priama, ironická, no aj zábavná a vtipná.
/ I’ve get to like the French writer Anna Gavalda right when I started to struggle with French original of the collected short stories “I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere”. In spite of my only intermediary French I was very appealed by the book. In her books and short stories, Anna Gavalda covers ordinary situations in unordinary way: she’s straight, ironic but funny and witty at the same time. POTTER, ALEXANDRA: Kto je to dievča? / Who's That Girl? - priznám sa, že autorku, ani jej knihy veľmi nepoznám, ale ako to už pri niektorých knihách býva, zaujalo ma predovšetkým nádherné, farebné slovenské vydanie, s podtitulkom: "Predstavte si, že by ste mohli stretnúť svoje mladšie ja..." / I have to admit that I know neither the author nor her books. However, as it usually goes with books, I was captured most of all by beautiful and colourful Slovak edition, with subtitle on the cover: “Imagine that you could meet you younger self…” MOYES, JOJO: Me Before You (Me Before You #1) - podobne je to aj v prípade Jojo Moyesovej. Len s tým rozdielom, že už som raz v časopise čítala úrivok z jednej jej knihy a tiež viem, že je obľúbenou autorkou mnohých žien. Preto by som si aj ja rada konečne prečítala jednu z jej kníh.
/ Same case as above with Jojo Moyes as well. Only with one exception that I’ve already read an extract from one of her books in a magazine, and I know that she is favourite author of many women. This is why I would like to eventually read one of her books. PERKINS, STEPHANIE: Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss #1) - americkú spisovateľku Stephanie Perkins už poznám a to vďaka poslednej knihe z trilógie, s názvom Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss #3), ktorú som začala čítať skôr, ako som zistila, že ide o poslednú knihu zo série. Príbehy troch mladých párov sú však relatívne samostatné, takže v tomto prípade vôbec neprekáža, že som začala poslednou knihou ;) a môžem sa stále veselo a s rovnakým záujmom teraz pustiť do čítania prvej knihy ;)
/ I know the American Stephanie Perkins already, thanks to the last book of the trilogy named Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss #3), I started to read before I’ve realised that this is actually the last book of a trilogy. The stories of the three young couples are however pretty standalone, so in this case I did no harm by starting with the last book ;) and I can happily and with the same interest start to read the first book ;)
GAIMAN, NEIL: The Ocean at the End of the Lane - no a napokon sa na mojom knižnom zozname na leto 2015 ocitla aj kniha, ktorú som už síce čítala, ale je natoľko fantastická, že si ju jednoducho chcem prečítať znova :)

Napísať recenziu knihy od Neila Gaimana, ktorý je mojim najobľúbenejším fantasy autorom (ako aj najobľúbenejším fantasy autorom tisícov a tisícov ľudí po celom svete), pre mňa znamená hovoriť o niečom, čo je zrejmé a tým aj zbytočné, ako hádzanie hrachu na stenu, či nosenie dreva do lesa. Ak máte radi fantasy, potom ste už na Neila Gaimana určite natrafili a netreba vám jeho tvorbu nijako bližšie predstavovať. Mnoho Gaimanových kníh však celkom nezapadá do fantasy, ale oveľa viac do žánru, ktorému sa hovorí magický realizmus: magický príbeh zasadený do reálneho sveta. A Oceán na konci ulice je jednou z nich. Ak ste však doposiaľ nemali tú česť a máte radi fantasy, či ešte len uvažujete nad tým, že by ste si mohli prečítať aj niečo z tohto žánru, no nie ste si celkom istí, či sa vám tento žáner bude páčiť, potom vám knihy Neila Gaimana vrelo odporúčam.
/ To write a review of a book by Neil Gaiman, who is my favorite fantasy writer (as well as favorite fantasy writer of thousands of people around the world), means for me like to state something obvious. If you like fantasy then you've certainly already came across Neil Gaiman and there's no need to introduce his works. Many Gaiman's books however do not fit the fantasy genre in but they fit rather in the genre called magical realism: magical story planted into real world. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one of them. If you haven't had the privilege to read Gaiman's books yet but you like fantasy, or you are pondering to read something from this genre but you are unsure if you will like it, then I warmly recommend you Gaiman's books.
V ten horúci piatkový večer, keď som začala čítať Oceán na konci ulice, samotnému čítaniu predchádzalo máčanie si opuchnutých nôh v lavóri so studenou vodou, sprevádzané relaxačným šumením vĺn z YouTube :) Až po chvíli mi zišla na um nečakaná asociácia s knihou, ktorú som sa chystala začať čítať: oceán v lavóri s vodou a útla knižka v mojej knižnici, s príbehom z pera výnimočného spisovateľa s neobmedzenou fantáziou.
/ On that hot Friday evening, when I started to read The Ocean at the End of the Lane, before starting to read actually, I was soaking my swollen feet in a basin with cold water accompanied by relaxing murmurs of the sea played from YouTube :) Only after a while an unexpected link with the book I was about to read occurred to me: the ocean in a basin and tiny book in my library, comprising story by an outstanding writer with unlimited imagination.
"I was not happy as a child, although from time to time I was content. I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else."
Oceán na konci ulice je príbehom, ktorý vznikol na základe spomienok Neila Gaimana na vlastné detstvo: dom, auto, záhradu, mesto, vlastný detský svet. Na tomto základe už potom Neil Gaiman rozvíja vlastnú fantáziu a to do smerov, výšok i hĺbok, aké dokáže vytvoriť jedine on. A stále necháva obrovský priestor aj pre fantáziu, otázky, domnienky, vysvetlenia a odpovede svojich čitateľov. To je úžasné majstrovstvo.
Hlavnou postavou a rozprávačom v jednej osobe, je muž v stredných rokoch, ktorý sa vracia do rodného mestečka, aby sa zúčastnil pohrebu. Po pohrebe ho cesta autom zláka ísť až na koniec ulice. Cestou sa pomaly rozpomína na svoje detstvo, až kým sa nedostane k farme na konci ulice. Sediac na lavičke pri rybníku si spomína na udalosti, ktoré sa odohrali keď mal sedem rokov. Rybník alebo oceán, patrí k farme rodiny, ktorú tvoria tri generácie Hempstockovských žien: Lettie, Ginie a stará pani Hempstocková. Najmladšia Lettie bola vtedy krátko jeho jedinou, no najlepšou kamarátkou, akú si mohol priať a prostredníctvom nej sa dostáva nielen do magického sveta, ale k samotnej podstate existencie. To sa však už dostávam k niečomu, čo treba objaviť pri čítaní samotnej knihy, aby to neznelo ako niečo úplne vytrhnuté z kontextu.
Mnoho vecí a skutočností v reálnom živote, ktoré považujeme za dané, nemenné a jasné, vyzerajú vo svojej podstate úplne inak ako ich vnímame - v skutočnosti sú niečím, či niekým iným. Presne ako rybník, či voda vo vedre, ktorá je v skutočnosti nekonečným oceánom. Alebo aj len niekoľko stranové vydanie Oceánu na konci ulice, a špeciálne to moje, medzinárodné, ktoré sa ľahko zmestí aj do mojej maličkej kabelky, a pritom obsahuje príbeh a otázky, ktoré vám zostanú v mysli ešte veľmi dlho po jej prečítaní.
/ The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a story based on Gaiman's recollections of his own childhood: the house, the car, the garden, the town and his own childish world. On this basis then Gaiman unwinds his own imagination in the ways, hights and depths only he can make. And he still leaves huge space for imagination, questions, speculations, explanations and answers of his readers. That is a great mastery. The main character and narrator in one is a midle-aged man returning to his home town to attend a funeral. On his way back, he is lured to drive until the end of the lane. On the way there, he gradually recalls his childhood till he reaches a farm at the end of the lane. Sitting on a bench by a pond he remembers events that happened when he was seven. The pond or the ocean, belongs to a farm of a family composed of three generations of Hempstock women: Lettie, Ginie and Old Mrs Hempstock. The youngest Lettie was then for a while his only and the best friend he could wish for and with her he gets not only into a magical world but gets to the very essence of the existence. However, I am getting too far with this. You have to discover it by reading the book, so that it does not sound without a context. Many things and facts in a real life which we consider to be given, unchanging and clear, actually look completely different as we perceive them - in reality they are something or someone different. Just like the pond, or water in a bucket, which is in reality an endless ocean. Or only a few pages edition of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and especially the international one I have, which even fits into my tiny handbag, and still it comprises a story and questions that will remain on your mind for a long time after you are done with the book.

Gaiman sa v príbehu zároveň majstrovským spôsobom hrá s pamäťou a spomienkami. V živote sa nanešťastie občas stanú veci, na ktoré by sme najradšej zabudli. Niekedy túto službu urobí naše podvedomie za nás, inokedy nie. Avšak v živote je aj množstvo vecí a zážitkov, ktoré by sme si najradšej uchovali v pamäti čo najlepšie, no nie je nám dovolené si na ne spomenúť a už vôbec nie si ich trvalo pamätať. A čo ak sa v zákutiach našej mysle skrýva oveľa viac spomienok, ako si sme schopní zapamätať? Oveľa viac než sme ich prežili za celý svoj život, od narodenia až po súčasnosť. Čo ak v našom vedomí existuje ďaleko viac spomienok, ktoré sa nám však odkrývajú len v určitých momentoch a aj to len veľmi nejasne? Ako déjà vu? Čo ak v sebe nosíme nie rybník, ale celý oceán spomienok? Nie je možno aj vedecké skúmanie formou rozpomínania sa?
/ In the story Gaiman also masterfully toys with memory and recollections. In life, unfortunatelysometimes happenthings thatwe wouldrather forget. Sometimes our subconsciousness does us the favor and sometimes it didn't. However, in life there are also plenty of things and experiences we would like to keep in our memory as best as we can but we are not allowed to remember them not to remember them permanently at all. And what if in there are many more memories hidden in the corners of our minds as we are able to remember? Many more than we relieved in our whole life from birth till today. What if there's far more memories in our mind that reveal themselves only in some moments and only very darkly? Like déjà vu? What if we keep inside not a pond but a whole ocean of memories? Isn't scientific research maybe also some kind of remembering?
Je tiež úžasné a zaujímave, ako sa dve knihy, ktoré čítam súčasne (zväčša jednu v angličtine a druhú v slovenčine), alebo v slede za sebou, dokážu vzájomne dopĺňať. V čase čítania knihy Oceán na konci ulice, som mala rozčítanú aj zbierku článkov Martina Mojžiša z týždenníka .týždeň, v ktorých populárnou formou vysvetľuje fyzikálne zákony, s ktorými síce denno-denne prichádzame do kontaktu, no nikdy sa nad nimi bližšie nezamýšľame, alebo pre nás nefyzikov zostávajú nevysvetlené, či pochopené celkom nesprávne. V niekoľkých článkoch sa autor okrajovo dotýka aj teórií kvantovej fyziky a mechaniky. A práve vplyv týchto vysoko vedeckých teórií je aj jednou z otázok, položených Neilovi Gaimanovi v mimoriadne zaujímavom videu o knihe Oceán na konci ulice, ktoré pripájam na záver tejto recenzie.
/ It's also amazing and interesting how two different books I read at the same time (usually one in English and the other in Slovak), or in succession, can complement one another. In the time of reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane, I was reading a collection of articles by Martin Mojžiš from the Slovak weekly .týždeň, in which in popular way he explains the laws of physics, which we encounter daily but we do not muse on them closely, or they stay unexplained for us non-physicists or even wrongly understood. In some of the articles the author also touches the theories of quantum physics and mechanics. And precisely the influence of these highly scientific theories is also one of the questions posed to Neil Gaiman in an interesting video about The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which you can find at the end of this review.
Po prečítaní ktorejkoľvek knihy od Neila Gaimana mám vždy chuť začať ju čítať odznova. Najprv ju dychtivo zhltnem, kapitolu po kapitole, a potom mám pocit, že si ju chce vychutnať ešte akosi lepšie - nielen nedočkavo chcieť poznať ďalší vývoj udalostí, ale vychutnať si ju ako celok, a zároveň veľmi detailne aj s tým, že už presne viem, ako skončí. V Gaimanových knihách je toho vždy oveľa viac, než len príbeh, vyvrcholenie a záver. A hoci túžim čítať a objavovať stále nové a nové knihy a príbehy, som si istá, že počas leta 2015 určite strávim pri knihe Oceán na konci ulice ešte niekoľko dní.
/ After finishing of any of the books by Neil Gaiman I feel like I would like to start to read all over again. First, I swallow it thirstily, chapter after chapter, and then I have the feeling that I want to enjoy it somehow better - not only want impatiently to know how the story is going to develop, but enjoy it as a whole as well as very thoroughly, even already knowing how it will end. In books by Gaiman there's still something more than only a story, culmination and the end. And though I desire to read and discover still new books and stories, I am sure that during Summer 2015 I am going to spend another few days by The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Toľko stručný opis základného rámca knihy, ktorý by ma celkom určite odradil vybrať si ju ako populárnu literatúru na oddychové čítanie. Až na to, že Markus Zusak dokázal na tomto základe vytvoriť jednu z najlepších kníh aké som kedy čítala.
/ That's short description of the basic framework of the book, which would for sure prevent me from choosing it as modern fiction for leisure reading. Except that Markus Zusak managed to create on this basis one of the best books I've ever read.
Kniha sa vyznačuje osobitým štýlom. Obsadenie smrti do úlohy rozprávača, poskytlo autorovi možnosť pozrieť sa na ľudské konanie z pohľadu outsidera, ktorý má na druhej strane možnosť sledovať ľudstvo a jeho konanie už niekoľko storočí. A túto možnosť využil Markus Zusak úplne naplno. Vecné komentáre pomenúvajúce veci pravým menom, s jemnou príchuťou žartu a irónie, pri ktorých má čitateľ pocit, že lepšie sa daná skutočnosť už postihnúť ani nedá.
/ The book has a specific style. Casting of the death in the role of the narrator, equipped Zusak with opportunity to view human acts from the point of an outsider, who on the other hand had the possibility to watch humanity and its actions for several centuries. And Zusak takes advantage of this possibility to the fullest. Matter-of-fact comments calling things by their proper names, with slight taste of joke and irony, when a reader gets the feeling that there's no better way to express the particular reality.

Smrť v podaní Markusa Zusaka je v mnohých ohľadoch aj, a toto vás možno prekvapí, mimoriadne ľudská. Oveľa ľudskejšia než ľudia, ktorí v histórii spôsobili zločiny ako Adolf Hitler. Toto je Smrť, ktorá dokáže rozlíšiť rôzne odtiene tak dobra, ako aj zla.
/ The death by Zusak is in many ways, and this is what will probably surprise you, exceptionally human. Far more human than people that in the history caused crimes like those of Adolf Hitler. This is the death, who is able to distinguish different shades of both good and bad.
Zlodejka kníh je však v prvom rade knihou o neskutočnej sile slov. Slovo je mocná zbraň, dokáže zabíjať, ale aj zachraňovať a dať životu nový zmysel. Hlavnou postavou knihy je dievčatko Liesel, ktorá sa ako deväťročná dostáva do adoptívnej rodiny Hubermannovcov, žijúcich na chudobnej Himmel Strasse, v okrajovej časti Mníchova. Liesel je negramotná, no priťahovaná svetom slov a kníh, sa za pomoci svojho pestúnskeho otca, harmonikára a bytového maliara Hansa Hubermanna, postupne učí čítať aj písať. Dve činnosti, ktoré tak zásadne zmenia celý jej ďalší život a to tak v dobrom, ako aj hrôzostrašnom zmysle.
/ However, first of all The Book Thief is a book about great power of words. A word is a powerful weapon, able to kill s well as rescue and give life a new meaning. The main character of the book is a little girl Liesel. Liesel is 9-years-old when she arrives into her foster family of Hubermanns, living on poor Himmel Street in the outskirts of Munich. Liesel is illiterate, though lured by the world of words and books, with help of her foster father, accordionist and house painter Hans Hubermann, she learns to read and write. Two activities that will profoundly change her life both in a positive as well as in a horrific way.

Popri zverstvách spôsobených nacistami, by sme takmer zabudli, že aj v nacistickom Nemecku žili obyčajní ľudia, ktorí chceli len pokojne žiť a s režimom nechceli mať nič spoločné, čo sa im ale kruto vypomstilo. V nacistickom Nemecku celkom určite žili aj ľudia podobní postavám z tejto knihy: deti, so svojim vlastným svetom, ako Liesel a jej najlepší kamarát Rudy Steiner; ľudia súcitiaci a obetaví ako Hubermannovci, či manželia Steinerovci, chrániaci vlastnú rodinu. Zločiny na ľuďoch, spáchané nacistami sa nedajú ničím zastrieť a nesnaží sa o to ani Markus Zusak. Markus Zusak predkladá skutočnosť vo všetkých jej rozmeroch.
/ Next to the atrocities committed by the Nazi, we would almost forget that even in the Nazi Germany, there were still ordinary people that only wanted to live in peace and didn't want to have anything to do with the regime, which cruelly rebounded on them. In the Nazi Germany, there certainly lived people similar to the characters from this book: kids with their own world like Liesel and her best friend Rudy Steiner; people compassionate and devoted like the Hubermanns, or Mr and Mrs Steiner, trying to protect their own family. Crimes against people committed by Nazis can't be covered by anything and Zusak don't even try to do so. Zusak presents the reality in all its dimensions.
Ako absolventku politológie ma určitým spôsobom láka každá beletria spojená s nejakým politickým režimom. Napriek tomu, a možno viac kvôli stručnému opisu z úvodu, som dlho otáľala nad kúpou a prečítaním si tejto knihy. Zlodejka kníh však rozhodne patrila na môj zoznam kníh na prečítanie. Hoci som typický pomalý čitateľ a prečítanie jednej priemernej knihy (cca 350-400 strán) mi bežne trvá aj celý mesiac, Zlodejku kníh som doslova hltala, niekedy aj pár kapitol naraz. Lákala ma a ja som sa večer čo večer, ráno čo ráno, tešila na čítanie. Majstrovskému štýlu Markusa Zusaka nechýba hádam nič. Niekedy čosi tají a mnohokrát prezrádza dej dopredu avšak neodrádza, ba presne naopak, láka prečítať si ešte jednu kapitolu. Alebo dve. Či tri? ;)
/ As a Political Science graduate I feel kind of attracted by fiction connected to some kind of political system. In spite of this, and maybe more due to the short description from the beginning, I've been hesitating to buy and read this book. However, The Book Thief was absolutely supposed to belong to my 'To Read List'. Although I am typical slow reader and it normally takes me even a month to read an average book (approx. 350-400 pages), I was swallowing The Book Thief, sometimes even several chapters in one session. It attracted me and every evening and every morning I was looking forward to read on. Zusak's masterful writing lacks perhaps nothing. Sometimes he keeps things hidden though many times he reveals next events but without discouraging, indeed the opposite, he attracts to read one more chapter. Or two. Or three? ;)
Zlodejka kníh právom patrí do mojej knižnice a do imaginárnej police mojich obľúbených kníh. Je to nádherná kniha.

Kniha vyšla aj v slovenskom preklade, vo vydavateľstve Ikar a nájdete ju hádam v každom kníhkupectve.
