DEWEY’S 24-HOUR READ-A-THON: SPRING EDITION 2017 (EN)

14:00 - I've decided to start my Read-a-thon in French, with Révolution by French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron, on page 119.

15:53 - just finished another chapter of Mr. Macron's book (left on page 135). I spent almost two hours of reading in French, savoring French words (éclatante - striking, obvious, became immediately one of my favorites) and writing down new words. Now, I am going to prepare myself some fruit. Then I am going to continue the read-a-thon with Adichie's Americanah.

16:28 - my next read and treat: bowl of grapes and mango, and Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Continuing on page 198.

21:35 - I've just passed the middle of Americanah and I am leaving it for now on page 251. Today, in the morning I began to consider reading Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. It's been sitting on my shelf for several months and after tense last weeks and all those non-fiction I read recently, I just feel like it would be great to get lost in a fantasy world for a while. And if it is as good as Goodreads reviews say, I hope it will keep me up until late at night.

0:19 - I've just finished Chapter 3 of Shadow and Bone (page 48) and I am going to read on.

8:00 - I fell asleep at 1:30, on page 64 of Shadow and Bone. But now I am up and running ;) and I can hardly wait to read it on until the end of the read-a-thon.

12:25 - sprinting through the Shadow and Bone. Now on page 160.

14:00 - ending read-a-thon on page 186 of Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I kind of hoped that I would be able to make it during the read-a-thon. Though, I hope that I will be able to finish it until the end of this prolonged weekend.

DEWEY’S 24-HOUR READ-A-THON: SPRING EDITION 2017 - MY READING PILE (EN)

Well, to be honest, there's no reading pile for this year's spring read-a-thon. I am currently reading 2 books I would like to make progress with during the read-a-thon.
The first one is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I am not even in the middle of this enticing book so I hope that I will make some bigger progress during the read-a-thon.
The second book, I am going to read during the read-a-thon is a campaigning book by French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron titled Révolution. I've started to read this book some months ago in order to find out more about Mr. Macron, as well as to improve my French.
The rest of my read-a-thon TBR will consist of books I will just feel like to read at the moment. So my final read-a-thon reading pile is going to be surprise even for me :)

English
I've been looking forward to the books from my April book haul since the beginning of March when I didn't buy any book. And this is also why in April I got myself a box full of interesting books :) I divided them according to genres:

  • Politológia / Political Science
  • Fikcia / Fiction

V knihe ponúka hĺbkovú analýzu štruktúry diskurzu i jeho premien v čase, analyzuje slovník kandidátov francúzskych prezidentských volieb, i súvislosti, v ktorých dané slová používajú najčastejšie. Viac o knihe a výskume sa môžete dozvedieť vo francúzskom videu nižšie.

Cécile Alduy is Profesor of French literature at Stanford University in California and Research Associate at Centre for Policy Research of Sciences Po in Paris. She is author of Ce qu'ils disent vraiment : Les politiques pris au mot (What do they really say: Politicians Taken at the Word). In the book she offers an in-depth analysis of discursive structure as well as its changes in time, she analyses vocabulary of the French presidential candidates and context in which they use to use concrete words most frequently. You can learn more about the book and research from the French video below.

Cécile Alduy was also a guest of some other program together with Gérard Courtois, Editor in Chief of the French daily Le Monde and author of the book Parties de campagne : La saga des élections présidentielles. In the book he follows nine presidential campaigns, from election of Charles de Gaulle to François Hollande.

Fikcia / Fiction

Nasledujú knihy, ktoré som chcela už dávno čítať.
Prvou z nich, je kniha All the Light We Cannot See od Anthonyho Doerra (kniha vyšla aj v slovenčine, pod názvom Svetlo, ktoré nevidíme).

Follow books I've been looking forward to read for so long.
The first one is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. The story takes place during the World War II, besides Paris, also in an enchanting Breton town of Saint-Malo, also pictured on the cover of the book.

Kniha The Unseen World od Liz Moorovej ma v prvom rade oslovila svojim obsahom.

English
First of all, The Unseen World by Liz Moor caught my attention by its synopsis. The book features 12-year old Ada Sibelus brought up by her father David, a briliant Professor of computer science at the university of Boston. Ada grows up in a stimulating environment surrounded by renowned academics, content until her father's memory starts to fail and he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Leaving his daughter a floppy disc, Ada starts to unveil his father's life he never spoke about. The fact that this book really deserves my attention was confirmed by excellent reviews by many bloggers and Youtubers.

English
Still highly relevant in today's world is the modern classic 1984 by George Orwell, about a totalitarian regime where one political party censors reality and controls lives of its citizens.

Zo skutočného života / Non-fiction

Po prečítaní knihy The Morning They Came for Us od vojnovej reportérky Janine Di Giovanni, z prvých rokov vojny v Sýrii, pred príchodom takzvaného Islamského štátu, som sa rozhodla posunúť ďalej a prečítať si knihu The Raqqa Diaries: Escape from 'Islamic State'.

English
After reading The Morning They Came for Us by a war reporter Janine Di Giovanni, from the first years of the war in Syria before arrival of the so called Islamic State, I've decided to move on and read The Raqqa Diaries: Escape from 'Islamic State'. The author of the book is a 24-year-old Syrian with pseudonym Samer, who survived horrors during occupation of Raqqa by the so called Islamic State and decided to testify even under the threat of death penalty. Besides the enormous contribution of the testimony and courage of the author, the asset of the book lies also in the form it was put together. The story is accompanied by urban art illustrations, which makes it even more accessible and designed for contemporary society. You can find a quick overview of the visual part of the book at the end of my Book Haul video on the top of this post.
